The Living Building Challenge
The Living Building Challenge (LBC) comprises seven performance areas: site, water, energy, health, materials, equity and beauty.
It calls for the creation of building projects at all scales that operates as cleanly, beautifully and efficiently as nature architecture. This approach is consistent with Tūhoe values and principles.
Te Kura Whare is the physical representation of these elements.
Prior to construction of Te Kura Whare the project was registered with the Living Building Challenge Institute, who monitored the building phases of Te Kura Whare to ensure minimum standards were being met in terms of the Seven Performances areas (above) of LBC concept are achieved. Te Kura Whare received Living Building Challenge certification in May 2017. Your building is New Zealand’s first to accomplish this concept, and one of only 15 certified Living Buildings in the world at that time. You can find more information about this on the International Living Future Institute website.
